Species Description
The Cocoi Heron is a bird of natural wetlands, feeding in shallow to deep water along lakeshores, rivers and swamps (either fresh or saltwater) throughout South America. It is the largest South American heron, and feeds in typical large-heron fashion: by stalking through the wetlands and using head tilting for better vision. The Cocoi Heron’s diet consists mainly of large fish, but it will also eat frogs, insects and aquatic invertebrates. Though it is a solitary bird, it will feed in mixed-species groups when food is prevalent; in these situations, it has been known to steal food from other birds.
