Species Description
The Eastern Screech Owl has one of the broadest ecological niches of any North American owl, breeding in the deciduous and mixed woods of the eastern United States and parts of Canada. It eats mostly large insects, though will also take small birds and mammals (mostly rodents); the Eastern Screech Owl can eat up to 1/4 to 1/3 of its weight each night. Like many owls, it is a sit-and-wait predator, hunting from perches in open woodland. Once prey is spotted, it will swoop to capture with its talons, though it has also been known to take insects on the wing; small prey is swallowed whole, while larger prey is taken back to the perch to be torn apart.
