Species Description
The Hoopoe (pronounced: Hu-pu) is the national bird of Israel. This bird has a distinctive crest of long orange feathers with black tips that frame its head and a fawn colored body with black barring on wings. It uses it's long tapering beak and and strong cranial musculature to probe for invertebrates in the ground. Hoopoes are found in a variety of habitats throughout Europe, Asia and Africa. The European and northern Asian populations migrate south in the winter.
