Species Description
The Burrowing Owl (Speotyto cunicularia) is a very small owl that is only slightly larger than a robin. They live in burrows in open prairie and range lands with low vegetation throughout North and South America. They are brown to buff and do not have ear tufts. They are diurnal and hunt small mammals, reptiles and insects. Interestingly, they are not completely carnivorous like other owls and will eat fruit and seeds especially the fruit of cacti.
