Species Description
The Greater Crested Tern, Thalasseus bergii, is a seabird in the tern family. It is a large tern with a long yellow bill, a glossy black crest, and black legs. Fish make up 90% of the prey items. Like all members of the of the genus Thalasseus, it feeds by plunge diving for fish in marine environments. The adult is 18-19 inches in length, contains a 49-51 inch wingspan, and weighs 325-397 g. It nests in dense colonies on coastlines and islands. The Greater Crested Tern is closely related to the Royal and Lesser Crested Tern, but is clearly distinguished by size and bill color.
