Species Description
The Egyptian Goose, which is actually a shelduck, is the only member of the genus Alopochen and was considered sacred by the early Egyptians. It lives throughout Africa, but populations are most concentrated south of the Sahara, in the Nile Valley. The Egyptian Goose grazes on land for seeds, shoots and leaves, but it will take insects on occasion. It is a largely terrestrial bird, more so than most other geese and ducks; the Egyptian Goose is also highly sedentary, and may spend its entire life in the same pond or lake (unless it is displaced by predators or drought).
