Species Description
The Common Tern, Sterna hirundo, is a seabird in the family Sternidae. This tern is typically 34-37 cm long and has a wingspan of 70-80 cm. The Common tern has a thin, sharp bill and long, red legs. It lives on rocky or sandy seashore, inhabits lakes, rivers, freshwater swamps, and freshwater marshes. This species breeds in temperate and sub-arctic regions of Asia, Europe, and Central North America. As the Common tern flies over the water, it hovers, and then plunge dives to take in fish and crustaceans.
