Species Description
The Scarlet Ibis, a long-legged and –necked wading bird related to the spoonbills, is found in tropical intertidal zones of South America and Trinidad and Tobago; it is the national bird of Trinidad. It lives in swamps and mudflats, where it searches for food using its long, thin, down-curved beak to probe the water. The Scarlet Ibis eats mostly crustaceans, with occasional fish and other small vertebrates taken as well. Its brilliant scarlet plumage, for which it is named, comes from carotenoid-based compounds in its food (specifically, red crabs). Said plumage does not develop until adulthood; juveniles are gray and white.
