Species Description
The Black Hornbill, like many hornbills, is found in Southeast Asia, specifically in the lowland primary evergreen forests of Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. It is a primarily arboreal bird, foraging in the upper to middle canopy for fruits, insects (mostly grasshoppers and locusts), small reptiles and amphibians; its long, dexterous bills allows it to manipulate and eat poisonous creatures (such as centipedes) without harming themselves. The Black Hornbill is one of the less showy members of the hornbill family, having all-black plumage. However, the males do possess a yellow bill and casque (the bill and casque of females is black).
