Species Description
The Bohemian Waxwing is one of three species of Bombycilla, and the only one not confined to a single continent. These highly nomadic birds eat mostly fruit, but will catch insects during the summer. They breed in open forests and winter wherever fruit is abundant. Their common name comes from Bohemia, and specifically gypsies; it refers to their constant movements and lack of a specific home range. Because the fruit they eat is normally very abundant (although for short periods of time), Bohemian Waxwings do not hold breeding territories. As such, they are one of the few “songbirds” to have no true song.
