Species Description
The Ocellated Turkey is found in the tropical deciduous and lowland evergreen forests of parts of the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) south to Guatemala and northern Belize. It is similar to its relative the Wild Turkey, only smaller and more brightly colored; its name comes from the iridescent eyespots on the tail. Like all turkeys, the Ocellated Turkey has a generalist diet, feeding on a wide variety of plant matter (leaves, seeds, berries, etc.) with some insects taken as well (the young subsist almost exclusively on insects for the first month of life). It is a mostly terrestrial bird, though it can fly; Ocellated Turkeys often roost in trees in small family groups to avoid night predators.
