Species Description
The Rosy-Billed Pochard is a common waterfowl found in south central South America, specifically Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil. Its species name is derived from a Guarani word for “showy wings”, referring to the white stripe on the wing that is only visible when the wings are outstretched. Although they are classified as diving ducks, Rosy-Billed Pochards behave more like dabbling ducks, getting most of their food (seeds, roots and aquatic vegetation) from the surface of the freshwater lakes and ponds in which they live. The male Rosy-Billed Pochard is clearly recognizable by its bright red bill; females possess slate gray bills.
