Species Description
The Helmeted Guineafowl (Numida melegaris) is a terrestrial bird that thrives in drier climates like south of the Sahara Desert in Africa, the West Indies, and southern France. It is a large bird which can grow up to 60 cm long and can weigh almost 1.5 kilograms. The Helmeted Guineafowl, when threatened, will run away from danger instead of using flight; it is a very strong runner, and it can walk up to ten kilometers in one day. Guineafowls form flocks of 25 birds during the breeding season. The young birds, a few days after hatching, have very developed wings and can fly to low branches. Guineafowls are robust birds that can live up to 12 years.
