Species Description
The hoatzin is an enigmatic, primarily arboreal bird found in the swamps, mangroves and riverine forests along the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers in South America. First described by Spanish explorers in the 17th century, the hoatzin averages 25 inches long and weighs around two pounds. The hoatzin is the only member of its family and genus, and its taxonomic relationships are still unresolved. Based on the morphology, the hoatzin was originally considered a galliform; more recent molecular studies have placed the hoatzin within various groups, including cuckoos, doves and turacos.
