Species Description
The Common Murre, Uria aalge, is a large auk. It is typically 15-18 inches in length with a wingspan of 24-29 inches. This species dives, and forages for food by swimming underwater. It uses its wings for propulsion. The Common Murre can dive to a depth of 100-200 feet. Most of the time it inhabits the sea, but when breeding, this bird comes to rocky cliff shores or islands. This species is not very agile. It mainly feeds on small fish, such as capelin, sprats, cod, and herring. Also, it feeds on mollusks, squid, and crustaceans.
