Species Description
The Little Owl is a small, diurnal owl that is native to the temperate and warmer parts of North America, Europe and North Africa. Like many owls, it is sedentary, and favors open country such as mixed farmland and parkland. The Little Owl is comfortable with human presence, and will nest in abandoned buildings or owl boxes. It eats mostly insects, earthworms and small amphibians, but will catch small birds and mammals on occasion. It normally captures prey in-flight, but can hop and run to chase prey as well. The Little Owl was sacred to the goddess Athena, which is the source of its genus name.
