Species Description
The Oldsquaw, or Long-Tailed Duck, is a seaduck, and the only member of its genus. A migratory bird, it breeds in the tundra pools and marshes of northern Canada, Europe and Russia, but winters along the coasts of North America and Europe – the Baltic Sea is a common wintering location. The Long-Tailed Duck feeds on mollusks, crustaceans and the occasional fish, which it catches by surface diving, sometimes to depths of up to 200 feet. While it does also feed at the surface, the Long-Tailed Duck spends the most time underwater relative to surface time when feeding of any duck.
