Species Description
Pterodroma lessoni, the White-headed Petrel, is mainly marine and is not seen near shores except in colonies or during stormy weather. Pterodroma lessoni feeds mainly on squid and crustaceans, which are captured during night diving. The population of White-headed Petrels is declining due to predation and invasive species, but remains at roughly 600,000 members to date. Breeding begins during October in loose colonies, at which time they will begin nesting in burrows dug in soft soil or scree near the coast or inland, up to 300 meters above sea level. Pterodroma lessoni can be distinguished by the dark eye line which gives them a masked appearance.
